Treebrook Counseling New Hampshire

Don’t let the past define you.

Take control and live the life you want.

Curious what working with me looks like? Read on…

So many people give up substances only to still feel controlled: by your partner, your boss, or your own thoughts & emotions! You sobered up yet still feel restless, irritable, and discontent. You are in charge of your own life no matter how it may feel at this moment. You just have to learn how to get there.

Working with me will help do exactly that. Some people come to therapy and think “She’s the professional, she has the answers, and she’s going to make me feel better”. That would be really cool if that’s how it worked but I, too, am not in charge of your destiny. We are not on an uneven playing ground, you and I; we are equals on a team trying to achieve the same goals, we just have different positions on the team. Our sessions are ground-zero for self-care and self-advocacy. It’s my job to make offerings based on what you discuss and your job to accept, reject, or correct those ideas. I follow your lead based on your needs.

It’s okay to not be okay.

Not all people are motivated or ready for therapy but still show up week after week and that is ok; there are plenty of wonderfully talented therapists who are highly skilled at motivating people into change. I, however, am not that therapist. I work with those individuals who know what they want but aren’t sure how to get there. They need ideas, support, and encouragement on how to do so. I will always have you set and/or I will set goals for you to work on in-between sessions as I feel that is where the “real work” takes place. Otherwise it’s just a conversation we have once a week for an hour. I want you to feel like you are getting something from our sessions and that “something” is a lifestyle change; that takes work on the outside.

While I am interested in your past, I am more interested in how that affects your present. Our time together is a judgment free place to be brutally honest about your thoughts and feelings. Honesty and consistency work together to create the foundation of trust. You focus on showing up honestly and I’ll focus on showing up for you consistently.

Together we’ll get to the root of the issue and find a solution and not just put a band-aid on your pain.

Kat Treebrook, Therapist in NH

Hi, I’m Kat Treebrook

This might sound good so far but how do you know if I practice what I preach? …

I always knew there was someone different inside of me when I was acting out in unhealthy ways; I just didn’t know how to access that person. I’ve done a lot of work on myself, sometimes 2 or 3 times because we are human and tend to fall back into old patterns. I know what self-sabotage is like. I know how frustrating it is to have to climb back out of a hole you thought you filled. I know how disheartening it feels when you have to “start over”.  I’m here to let you know this is normal, even though we wish it weren’t or that we were the exception to the rule, and that I’m here to support you in this. The best we can do is learn from our past. I will help you understand what happened during those slips or relapses to lessen the intensity of the next time or prevent it from happening again.

I will never ask you to do anything I haven’t done myself.

“Here! Try this! I have no idea if it works.” That just won’t happen. I am not a talking puppet with a grad school degree whose only source of knowledge is books. I’m a human who’s lived a lot of life and experienced things. I’ve supported a lot of people in their journeys. And I care about your peace of mind.

I also care about your peace of body. My background is in various mind/body wellness modalities such as dance/movement therapy, mindfulness, and yoga therapy. If these words mean nothing to you, that’s okay. Your sessions are yours and working in these ways is your discretion. I am well-versed in how to incorporate mind/body integration into talk therapy. If you are, however, interested know these are options as well. My point in saying all this is that I view you as a complete person: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. When one area is affected, the rest are, too. This is why we have terms like “hangry” in our culture. I teach you how to look at yourself as a whole, complete individual instead of a walking, talking, disembodied head.

I care about your peace of mind and your peace of body. Learn more about my guiding principles.

  • I recognize, and believe in, the importance of social support and community when it comes to healing. What I mean by individuality is I view you as more than a label. Your addiction, your trauma, your anger, your grief, your mental health: they are all only a part of you. YOU are so much more.

  • I believe growth takes place in between the sessions. As you experiment with techniques you’ve learned or process insights you’ve had, you’ll deepen your understanding outside of our time together. This is why I feel it’s important to be available in that in between time. I have an “open door policy” where I offer text or phone support as needed. I do not disappear when our session is over; I become a support for you.

  • I recognize the importance of a genuine relationship between client and therapist. This means there is no topic that is off limits, no words you can’t say, no thoughts you can’t express. This also means I’m willing to ask you difficult questions and discuss difficult topics with you.

  • I believe a therapist has a duty to be flexible to a client as a unique individual as opposed to prioritizing the convenience of the therapist. These sessions are yours; you will learn to build autonomy and a voice of self-advocacy. The sessions are self-directed and thus can change week to week based on your needs. In addition, how often we meet, length of session, and length of treatment can change based on your needs as well.
